About Us

H. Robert Slater was always an inquisitive youth and was very interested in understanding how machines were made and worked. In his teen age years he furthered his inquiring mind by enlisting in the U.S. Navy and quickly rose to the rank of Chief Machinist’s Mate. He served valiantly during World War 1. After the war he brought his significant experience and talents back home to Chicago and started his business. It wasn’t long before The H. R. Slater Company earned the reputation as a proficient and responsive machining and fabricating company.

H. Robert’s son John joined his father in the business after serving as an Officer in the U.S. Army Engineers during World War II in the pacific theatre. John Slater further advanced the company by bringing his unique skill set and ideas forth. He became president in 1960 and the company continued to flourish throughout the 35 years with John as President.

In 1984, H. Robert’s grandson, Robert Slater Kurzka joined the business armed with a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology and 3 years experience with the Continental Can Company.
